Potato and Onion Info

Week of June 30, 2008

Russet

It has been reported that California may be completed sometime between the 18th and the 22nd of July and other fresh new crop growing regions at best will start 1st week of August. During the week of June 23rd we saw prices level off and in some areas even adjust down but overall the market remand steady.

There are fewer sheds producing each week and with California’s crop finished in late July we could see continuous increases on carton and consumer bags for the next 5 to 6 weeks. Demand will exceed supplies for the next 5 to 6 weeks with basically 3 shipping areas in play once California is depleted (Colorado, Idaho and Washington). New crop Washington that is normally going by mid to late July won’t start until the first week of August.

Growing areas (Potatoes) update

  • California -half way through and should be completed by the 3rd week of July.

  • Texas / New Mexico - Mother Nature has created a few stumbling blocks with heat and wind. Size profile, yield may be affected and harvest should be delayed somewhat.

  • Kansas - With all the threats Mother Nature has presented this season in Kansas, things are shaping up nicely. For most the rows have filled in and the potatoes are taking shape. Look for harvest to begin the first full week of August. We still have a long way to go so lets hope the weather cooperates.

  • Nebraska - should start one week after Kansas begins.

  • Colorado - we had a few cold nights the week of June 9th but since then the growing conditions have been extremely good. We should see some kind of delay 1 to 2 weeks possible.

    Reds

  • With Bakersfield all but complete the red market is moving up, we have seen an increase of $6.00 to $7.00 per 100wt. There are supplies in Virginia and North Carolina, quality is fair to good and prices are quoted as high as $17.00 on 50lb sack B’s and $15.00 on 50lb sack A’s. Stockton should begin this week, but the volume should not force the market down.

  • Washington will be next and harvest should start around the first of July so we will see the market remain high probably through August. Relief may come once North Dakota and Minnesota start and all indications are they will be late out of the field.

  • West Texas and Kansas will have a few reds around the 15th of July.

    Yellows Flesh

  • Still a few in Bakersfield moving to Stockton, this market will continue to move up.

    Onions

  • Onion movement continues to be good but overall market is down on yellows, whites and reds seem to be holding up. Markets should hold for the next few weeks do not see anything on the horizon disturbing this market.

  • Yellow market $5.00 ON Mediums and $6.00 on Jumbos quality is good

  • Red market $6.00 on 25lb mediums and $7.00 on 25lb Jumbos quality good

  • White market $8.00 on mediums and $10.00 on Jumbos quality is excellent out of Mexico

4th of July is this weekend!

  • The largest potato grown was 18 pounds and 4 ounces according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It was grown in England in 1795.
